She/Her/Hers

Jilene A. C. Chua is Assistant Professor in Asian American History. She teaches courses related to Asian American history, fashion and US empire, and global Philippines.

Her research on twentieth-century Philippines intersects US empire, Chinese migration, and legal history. Her current book project, Marginal Cosmopolitans, investigates US colonial Philippines from the perspective of the Philippine Chinese in the first half of the 20th c. By examining how these individuals used colonial laws to overturn or challenge anti-Chinese laws, this project seeks to identify how the Philippines—a diverse archipelago in Southeast Asia—uncovers new relationships between law, property, and empire. Sign up here for updates on her publications.
