AMNESP Welcomes Dr. Bunschoten!

Dr. Claire Bunschoten joined AMNESP in Fall of 2023 as Abbott Lowell Cummings Postdoctoral Fellow in American Material Culture. After a nationwide search, she was chosen by a committee composed of Prof. William Huntting Howell, Prof. Merry White, and Prof. William Moore.

Dr. Bunschoten holds a Ph.D. in American Studies from from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a scholar of food studies. Her recent dissertation, “Extracts, Essences, and Political Effects: How Vanilla Shapes American Life,” tracks vanilla’s numerous uses and shifting meanings in the United States.

The Abbott Lowell Cummings Postdoctoral Fellowship, endowed by an anonymous donor, will allow Dr. Bunschoten to contribute to the intellectual development of students within AMNESP while she conducts research and advances her own scholarly career.
