How does the body break down alcohol?
In this lesson, students will learn about the breakdown of alcohol in the body and how enzymes work to perform this process. By performing the lab procedure and graphing their data, students discover that enzymes cannot always keep up with their substrates, and alcohol accumulates in the body. This lesson develops students' skills by following a laboratory protocol, using a micropipette, measuring solutions, using a spectrophotometer, graphing, analyzing, and interpreting data.
Students will:
- Predict how alcohol is broken down.
- Learn to use p200 micropipettes.
- Perform an alcohol dehydrogenase assay.
- Graph experimental data and interpret findings.
