Professor of English
Professor Laurence Breiner holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Literature from Yale University. His primary research area is the literatures of the English-speaking Caribbean. His publications in the field include An Introduction to West Indian Poetry, and Black Yeats: Eric Roach and the Politics of Poetry, as well as numerous articles and reviews, some of them translated into Spanish and Japanese. He has taught Caribbean Studies as Visiting Professor in American Studies at the University of Tokyo, while his research has been supported by grants from NEH, ACLS, and the Rockefeller Foundation. He is currently writing about Jamaican dub poetry and about the impact of Japanese drama and film on Derek Walcott’s plays.
