Admissions Tests and Prerequisites for the MA
Candidates for the Master of Arts in African American Studies must hold a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution. Because of the broad focus of this program, there are no specific undergraduate concentration requirements except that the student must have completed some study in both the Humanities and the Social Sciences. Graduate Record Examination (GRE) General Tests are not required of applicants.
Applications and instructions for submission of complete credentials are here. Frequently asked questions are answered here.
Applications should be submitted online directly to the Graduate Admissions Office and should include the following materials:
- Completed Online Application
- Writing Sample
- Statement of Purpose
- Current CV or resume
- Two letters of recommendations, preferably from faculty members who have worked with you in an academic setting
- Transcripts from all previous institutions
- TOEFL results, if appropriate
Financial Aid
Some departmental financial aid is available. Students who wish to be considered for priority financial aid must have their applications submitted by February 15th, 2026 and final submissions accepted March 15th, 2026. Applications received after this date will be reviewed by the Graduate Admissions Committee, but the program cannot guarantee funding consideration.
You can find additional information about financial aid and scholarships available to graduate students here. In addition, the Provost has a list of Award opportunities here.
We encourage prospective applicants to contact Professor Margarita Guillory, Director of the African American and Black Diaspora Studies Program for more information about the program or to discuss their research interests.
