AABDS Annual Lecture Recap
Dr. Anthony B. Pinn joined the African American and Black Diaspora Studies Program for a discussion at the Howard Thurman Center. Pinn’s lecture, “Between Dr. Dubois and Dr. Dre: Thoughts on the Problem of Blackness, Black Being and Being Black,” explored the relationships within music, life, and death in the context of Blackness. He discussed the impact that early rappers such as Scarface and Dr. Dre have had on culture and how their interpretations of Blackness relate to DuBois’s work despite the historical divide between them. Pinn argued that although rap music is often centered on the Black experience, it should also be regarded as a sociological reflection of society. The evening concluded with a thoughtful Q&A where Dr. Pinn gave students and faculty space to share their own opinions. A recording of the talk is available to stream below.
