AFAMBDS Student Employee Charlot Valerio featured in CAS Q&A
Charlot Valerio (CAS’26) was recently interviewed by CAS for a Q&A titled “Diaspora Chats Panel Explores Racial Identity.” In the Q&A, Charlot discusses our program’s recent student-led forum Diaspora Chats.
Hosted on Thursday, April 20, 2023, Diaspora Chats was a student-faculty discussion on identity within the Black Diaspora, aiming to challenge conventional ideas surrounding the definition of and ownership of Black culture and identity and foster common ground between members of the Black Diaspora.
Your identity—knowing where you belong and where your community is—is so important. With your race, there are certain caveats that help you understand where your traumas come from, or where you belong systematically. It’s important to have these conversations of race and knowing where you belong, even if you don’t fit like a cookie cutter mold. It’s just where you feel you identify the most and with whom you identify the most so you can better note yourself in a better field and feel more comfortable within yourself. —Charlot Valerio
