EdM in World Language Education
EdM in World Language Education (Residential)
The Master of Education (EdM) in World Language Education provides graduate study for aspiring and practicing world language educators. The EdM is designed as a 12-month, full-time or part-time program that may begin in June or September each year. Students are expected to hold a minimum of Advanced-level proficiency in the language they are aspiring to teach prior to being admitted into this program. Students in this program complete courses in education, language acquisition, and world language pedagogy.
There are four tracks within this master’s degree:
- Aspiring World Language Licensed Educator, Grades PreK–6
- Aspiring World Language Licensed Educator, Grades 5–12
- Aspiring World Language Educator (non-licensure)
- Advancing Professional in World Language Education
Aspiring World Language Licensed Educator, Grades PreK–6/Grades 5–12
World language educators who aspire to teach in public schools may pursue the Initial teaching license in one of nine different languages (Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Portuguese, Russian, or Spanish) at either the preK–grade 6 or grade 5–12 levels. Students have the option of pursuing dual licensure for either the same language at two levels (preK–6 and 5–12) or in two languages, as well as adding the ESL license or pursuing a Graduate Certificate in TESOL. (Licensure reciprocity exists with many states, but students should investigate specifics in the state of anticipated residence.) Licensure-seeking students will engage in a year-long supervised field placement as part of their program. For part-time students who hold the Provisional license, this field placement may occur in their own classroom.
Aspiring World Language Educator (non-licensure)
World language educators who aspire to teach in adult, international, or private school settings may focus on any modern language through this program, and at any level of education (preK–16). Students complete a student-teaching practicum as part of their program to provide structured support to prepare them as classroom teachers. Students may additionally pursue a Graduate Certificate in TESOL.
Advancing Professional in World Language Education
World language educators who are already licensed or experienced teachers and are seeking to advance their professional knowledge engage in coursework and complete a field experience course in which they are observed in their own classroom, receive structured feedback and coaching on their teaching, and prepare a portfolio demonstrating professional standards of effective world language teaching. Students may additionally pursue a Graduate Certificate in TESOL.
Learning Outcomes
As a result of successful completion of this program, students will achieve the following learning outcomes:
- Effectively build relationships with language learners, working with them to create an environment where they are safe and can flourish, and that can support the identified learning performance objectives.
- Carefully plan standards-based courses, units, and lessons that embed high-yield strategies allowing students to reach identified course, unit, or lesson performance objectives.
- Use high-yield teaching and learning strategies designed to move students toward the attainment of carefully planned course, unit, and lesson performance objectives.
- Use assessment strategies that allow students to demonstrate what they can do with what they know and to receive helpful feedback that advances the attainment of the performance objectives.
- Strategically select resources designed to support course, unit, and lesson performance objectives.
- Identify, involve, and leverage the continuous support of a variety of stakeholders, such as other educational professionals, parents, local and global community, and others in the learning process.
- Identify how their own continued professional preparation contributes to student success and how they can model lifelong learning skills through their own professional growth.

Add-On License in Teaching English Language Learners (ESL)
The TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of other Languages) Program offers a five-course, 18-credit add-on license pathway for licensure-seeking graduate students pursuing initial certification in another content area. Through this pathway, licensure-seeking students also meet requirements for an initial license in English as a Second Language (ESL) (PreK–6 or 5–12) in Massachusetts.
In this course of study, students are introduced to the key factors affecting second-language acquisition, learn techniques for fostering language development through rich academic content, and practice strategies relevant to teaching English as a second language. In addition, they learn how to support students’ literacy skills in their home languages, and how to integrate best practices of culturally sustaining teaching into their classrooms. As part of the program, licensure-seeking students complete an ESL practicum.
This pathway consists of the following courses:
- SED BI 504 Seminar: The Student-Teaching Experience—Bilingual (ESL) Language (2 cr)
- SED BI 515 Methods in Bilingual Education and English as a Second Language (ESL) (4 cr) OR SED TL 508 Methods in Teaching English as a Second Language (4 cr)
-
SED BI 535 Literacy Development for Bilingual Students: Instruction and Assessment (4 cr)
-
SED LS 658 Second Language Acquisition (4 cr)
-
SED TL 571 Student-Teaching Practicum: ESL, PreK–6 (4 cr) OR SED TL 573 Student-Teaching Practicum: ESL, 5–12 (4 cr)
Add-On Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL)
Enrolled students may apply to add a Graduate Certificate in TESOL. In addition to completing the requirements above, students must complete two additional courses required for the certificate:
- SED LS 567 Structure of English (4 cr)
- SED TL 509 Foundations of TESOL Pedagogy (4 cr)
