• SED EN 505: Student-Teaching Half Practicum: English 8-12
  Minimum 150 hours required. For description, see SED EN 508. 4 cr, 1st sem.
• SED EN 506: Curriculum Materials and Teaching Strategies in English
  Considers research-based strategies for teaching short fiction, poetry, novels, drama, grammar, and vocabulary. The course also considers key aspects of the teaching and learning process such as lesson and unit planning, assessment, and the role of local, state and federal standards in the English/Language Arts classroom. 4 cr.
• SED EN 507: Student-Teaching Practicum: English, Grades 5-8
  Full-time student-teaching in selected middle schools for a period of 12 weeks. Should be taken concurrently with SED EN 506. Minimum 300 hours required. Instructor permission required. 8 cr.
• SED EN 508: Student-Teaching Practicum: English, 8-12
  Full-time semester long student teaching in selected high schools. Should be taken concurrently with SED EN 506. Minimum 300 hours required. 8 cr.
• SED EN 512: Methods of Teaching Writing in Secondary English Language Arts
  Introduces aspiring middle and secondary English/Language Arts teachers to research-based practices for effective writing instruction. Topics include writing workshop, mentor texts, genre study, strategy instruction, process-based instruction and revision. 4 cr.
• SED EN 538: American Literature for Teachers
  This course focuses on teaching American literature at the high school level. Goals include building a knowledge base in American literary history, modeling deep learning with selected texts, addressing theoretical questions in English Language Arts pedagogy, and learning practical classroom skills. 4 cr. 1st sem. Effective Fall 2019, this course fulfills a single unit in each of the following BU Hub areas: Individual in Community, Teamwork/Collaboration.
• SED EN 608: Practicum for Practicing Professionals: 5-8
  Student teaching grade 5 -- 8 experience for teaching professionals. Full-time student-teaching (300 hours) in selected schools. For Practicing Professionals only, with program approval. 4 cr.
• SED EN 609: Practicum for Practicing Professionals: 8-12
  Student teaching grade 8 -12 experience for teaching professionals. Full-time student-teaching (300 hours) in selected schools. For Practicing Professionals only, with program approval. 4 cr.
• SED EN 701: Teaching Classic and Contemporary Texts
  Students examine the demands of texts in the secondary classroom and components of successful reading. The course will analyze research-based practices in reading instruction in the middle and secondary English Language Arts classes. Methods for assessing and differentiating according to various dimensions will be introduced. 4 cr.
• SED EN 712: Methods of Teaching Writing in Secondary English Language Arts
  The course introduces graduate aspiring middle and secondary English/Language Arts teachers to research- based practices for effective writing instruction and contains opportunities for application in a field experience. Topics include writing workshop, mentor texts, genre study, strategy instruction, process-based instruction and revision. 4 cr.
• SED HD 224: Emotional Development
  Provides an overview of emotional development throughout the life span. Explores implications of theory and research for curriculum development, social programs, and policy. 4cr
• SED HD 264: Research Methods
  Introduces scientific methods of inquiry in psychology. Examines research design, selection of measures, data collection, descriptive analyses, and research ethics. Individual research projects are required. 4 cr.
• SED HD 316: Children's Political Lives
  Course will reconstruct the stages/phases of political understanding children bring to the political process; explore how children's political beliefs/attitudes are shaped by their political environment (e.g., race, class, nationality, historical circumstances, society's level of development); develop strategies for children's political empowerment. 4 cr.
• SED HD 327: Asian American Psychology
  Examines the psychological experiences of Asian Americans, including the historical, sociopolitical, and cultural influences that shape? lived experiences? and mental health. Explores foundational concepts (culture, ethnicity, race) as they pertain to diverse Asian Americans, and considers cultural competence, intervention and prevention strategies in working with Asian Americans. 4 cr.
• SED HD 330: Psychology of Race
  Interdisciplinary investigation of the historical, ideological, structural, and individual manifestations of race and racism in society. The course will also examine how the intersection of race with factors such as social class, gender, ethnicity, and identity shape the human experience. 4 cr.
• SED HD 354: Achievement Gap
  Examines racial/ethnic differences in academic achievement in the U.S. by investigating societal, cultural and familial factors. Explores the roles of institutional racism, cultural beliefs and parental socialization practices. Scrutinizes inter-national achievement differences, and analyzes cutting edge solutions to close the achievement gap. 4 cr.
• SED HD 362: Meaning & Development of Play
  Examines play from birth through adolescence, its role in social, emotional and cognitive development, its therapeutic and educational value, how the environment, including toys and media, shapes play, and how to promote quality play in diverse settings with diverse children. 4 cr.
• SED HD 385: Psychological Trauma
  Introduces students to the concept of trauma and psychological consequences associated with exposure to potentially traumatizing events; explores risk and protective factors, inter-generational transmission, treatment of trauma, and post-traumatic growth. Special attention paid to sociological factors associated with post-traumatic adjustment and resilience. 4 cr.

• SED HD 501: Child Development
  Examines physical, cognitive, social, moral and emotional development from conception through adolescence. Discusses theory and research from different psychological approaches. Pays special attention to the social and cultural contexts in which development occurs.
