  • SED DE 672: Sign Language Structure
    Covers the structure of sign languages, with a primary focus on American Sign Language. Topics include phonology, morphology, syntax, lexicology, language variation, psycholinguistics, and language emergence. *Prereq: SED DE 382/582. 4 cr.
  • SED DE 678: Practicum Equivalent: Student Teaching
    Full-time Student teaching. This is the last requirement of the graduate teacher training experience. Students will complete a minimum of 300 hours of teaching alongside master teachers. The Practicum Supervisor's permission is required for registration, approval is based on performance in all prior coursework. Var cr.
  • SED DE 690: Seminar: Practicum
    Designed to provide opportunities to discuss topics relevant to student teaching with Deaf children. Primary focus is on (a) the role of ASL in content areas in addition and (b) the use of effective teaching strategies. (Must also be enrolled in DE 678). Var cr.
  • SED DE 691: Advanced Seminar: Learning and the Deaf
    Examination of the current research on a topic pertinent to Deaf Education. The goal is to develop a more in-depth understanding of research in Deaf Education. 2 cr.
  • SED DE 693: American Sign Language 6
    Focus on academic ASL in the bilingual teaching of content areas (English, Language Arts, History, Mathematics, Science) paying special attention to concepts vocabulary and terminology that commonly appear in the content areas. 4 cr.
  • SED DS 502: Introduction to Adolescent Development
    Develops important understandings of cognitive, social-emotional, and identity developing during adolescence, as well as the role that educators can play in fostering the mindsets, skillsets, character strengths and contexts that adolescents need to grow into healthy and high-performing adults. 2 cr. This course fulfills a single unit in the following BU Hub area: Social Inquiry I.

  • SED DS 504: Adolescent Development
    Overview of diverse development theories of preadolescence, adolescence, and young adult development. Cognitive, sociomoral, personal, and identity development are examined as well as physical, motor, and fitness development. 3 cr.
  • SED DS 600: Culture, Ethnicity and Race: A developmental approach
    Cultural and racial-ethic differences in development and how these differences translate into counseling practices. We consider several topics including: communication, child-rearing, cognitive development, and schooling. 4 cr.
  • SED DS 700: Advanced Seminar in Sport and Exercise Psychology
    Emphasis on theory, research, and applied aspects of contemporary sport and exercise psychology. Students develop a research project that involves conceptualizing a problem statement, designing a study, and collecting and analyzing data. 4 cr.
  • SED EC 206: Jumpstart: Preschool Service Learning
    This course is designed to provide background information about preschoolers' development, with a focus on literacy and social development. Successful interventions in preschool classrooms. The course also provides information about the overall context of the achievement gap and related issues. Open to Jumpstart corps members only. 2 cr.
  • SED EC 305: Child Development and Early Childhood Education
    Analyzes the physical, cognitive, language, social, and emotional domains of development in young children from birth to middle childhood. Includes both descriptive information (milestones) and theory (processes accounting for development) and stresses application of these to early education. Prereq: CAS PS 101. 4 cr.   • SED EC 315: Child Development and Education
    Analyzes selected aspects of development in young children. Includes both descriptive information (milestones) and theory (processes accounting for development) and stresses application of these to early education. 4cr, either sem.
  • SED EC 350: Introduction to Early Childhood Education
    Presents key topics in early childhood education so that students establish basic understandings of the field, including: historical foundations, the role of the teacher, nature of the young child and the role of play in early education. This course is designed for students who are majors in Early Childhood Education or are considering this field of study. 4 cr.
  • SED EC 405: Preschool Curriculum and Fieldwork
    Supervised teaching of 2.93-to-5-year-olds. Emphasis on applying knowledge of development and child observation skills to planning curriculum, guiding behavior, arranging a classroom environment, and adapting teaching to special learners, including English language learners, in a play-based setting. Fldwk w/ seminar. Instructor permission required. 8 cr.

    Develops competency in reading and language skills, social studies and science education, basic elements of curriculum design, and the institutional policies and practices of early childhood education.   • SED EC 507: Role of Play in Early Child Education
    Examines theories of play and the r. Role of play in cognitive, affective, and social development of the child. Strategies for applying research on playful learning in classrooms are explored; play and creativity. Field observation and analysis. 4 cr.
  • SED EC 510: Preschool Practicum
    Required in provisional certification program for majors. Includes 150 hours of supervised teaching of 3-to-5-year-olds. Emphasis on curriculum development, instructional planning, classroom management, assessment/evaluation, and adaption of teaching to special learners.
  • SED EC 511: Field Experiences in Early Childhood Curriculum and Prepracticum
    Seminars and fieldwork in early childhood classrooms. Seminars examine instructional practices in literacy and language arts, social science, and science. Includes 100 hours of field experience in a public school kindergarten classroom. Fldwk w/ seminar. 4 cr, var cr.
