• SED ME 545: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: Elementary
  This course aims to support pre-service teachers to learn how to teach mathematics in ways that enable students in grades 1-6 to develop deep, conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas, fluency with mathematical procedures, and productive mathematics identities. In particular, the focus is on learning to lead mathematical discussions that build on and advance children's mathematical ideas. Prereq: CAS MA107 or SED ME503. 4 cr.
• SED ME 546: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: Middle School
  Focuses on examining the role of a middle school mathematics teacher from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Topics include exploring strategies for maintaining productive learning environments, developing and implementing lessons effectively, and assessing students' mathematical thinking. Teaching enactments are an integral part of the course. 4 cr.
• SED ME 547: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: High School
  Focuses on examining the role of a high school mathematics teacher from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Topics include exploring strategies for maintaining productive learning environments, developing and implementing lessons effectively, and assessing students' mathematical thinking. Teaching enactments are an integral part of the course. 4 cr.
• SED ME 551: Mathematics for Special Needs Students
  Examines programs for mathematics students with special needs in grades K-12, focusing on gifted students, students with learning disabilities, and their intersection. Topics include diagnostic techniques, alternative curricula, appropriate instructional strategies, and classroom organization techniques. 4cr.
• SED ME 558: Mathematics Curriculum: Program Issues, Trends
  Analysis of historical, mathematical, and psychological factors influencing grades K-12 mathematics curricula. Focuses on national and international standards, research on learning and teaching with understanding, and integrated curricula. 4 cr.
• SED ME 559: Mathematics for Teaching: Geometry
  Revisits geometry from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to teach geometry with understanding. Topics such as transformations, proof, Euclidean, and non-Euclidean geometries, manipulative materials, technology, standards, and curriculum in the teaching and learning of geometry. 4 cr.
• SED ME 560: Mathematics for Teaching: Algebra
  Revisits school algebra from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to teach algebra with understanding. Topics include variables, patterns, functions, linear algebra, manipulatives, technology, standards, and curriculum in the teaching and learning of algebra. 4 cr.
• SED ME 563: Problem Solving in Mathematics
  This course explores the teaching and learning of mathematics through solving sets of challenging problems. Topics include: research on problem solving and how its design and implementation can be supported in the classroom. 4cr.
• SED ME 589: Designing Professional Development Programs in Mathematics Education
  Students examine models for the professional development of mathematics teachers; conduct needs assessment of the teachers in their target groups; and design professional development programs that respond to those needs. Programs focus on upgrading mathematical content knowledge and pedagogical and assessment practices. 4cr.
• SED ME 701: Learning Theory and Epistemology in Mathematics Education
  This seminar course for advanced graduate students explores the contemporary and historical research and theory with regard to the learning and knowing of mathematics. 4 cr.
• SED ME 702: Advanced Study of Mathematics Teaching and Teacher Education
  This seminar course for advanced graduate students examines theoretical and empirical research in the areas of mathematics teaching and mathematics teacher education. 4cr.
• SED ME 703: Curriculum Research and Theory in Mathematics Education
  This seminar course for advanced graduate students explores contemporary and historical research and theory in mathematics education with regard to curriculum, including its analysis, use, design, and effects. 4cr.
• SED ML 530: Supporting and Assessing Second Language Development
  Examines the use of the WIDA and other assessments to plan ESL instruction for children at different proficiency levels. Develops skill at ESL instruction using sensory, graphic and interactive supports. Explores how to incorporate funds of knowledge and family support into the ESL curriculum. 3 cr.
• SED ML 535: First and Second Language Acquisition
  Explores theories and research in first and second language acquisition in a variety of sociocultural contexts. Examines stages of second language acquisition with attention to contextual and individual factors affecting pace and outcomes. Considers developmental trajectories in phonology, grammar, lexicon and pragmatics, as well as in receptive and expressive language. 3 cr.
• SED PE 103: Introduction to Physical Activity and Movement
  In this course, students will examine and analyze contemporary views and practices of health, wellness, and physical activity through review of: historical and philosophical perspectives; evolving issues and discussions in the health, wellness, and physical activity fields; review of sociocultural influences in professional practices and research paradigms; current recommendations for research-based health, wellness, and physical activity practices and/or behaviors. 2 cr.
• SED PE 211: Movement Education: Early Childhood to Adolescence
  Assists special education and elementary school teachers in the organization, planning, and integrating of motor activities into classroom settings. 2 cr.
• SED PE 250: Community Leadership through Youth Sport Coaching
  This course will enable students to gain an understanding of the roles and responsibilities of the youth sport coach as well as to develop basic coaching skills through classroom study of coaching theory combined with practical involvement in a community sport organization. 2 cr.
• SED PE 375: Psychology of Sport
  Introduction to the field of sport psychology. An overview of theory and practice related to contemporary issues in the field, including personality and performance, motivation, attention control, leadership styles, stress/arousal/anxiety, athletic counseling, performance enhancement techniques, and testing and performance motivation. 4 cr.
• SED PE 500: Universal Design for Working with Youth
  Universal Design is a research-based instructional design framework that helps practitioners reduce barriers to comprehension and skill development by creating flexible and inclusive learning environments. In light of the diverse representations of cognitive and physical abilities found among students in youth development settings (such as physical or health education classrooms, sports teams, and after-school programs), the need for flexible means of content delivery, student assessment, student engagement, and environmental design is critical to a program's success. PE 500 will explore the roots of Universal Design, the Universal Design for Learning framework (as developed by the Center for Applied Special Technology), and ways Universal Design for Learning can be applied to a variety of youth development environments. 2 cr.
• SED PE 501: Methods of Coaching
  Principles and problems in coaching various individual and team sports. Theory and techniques in coaching including offensive and defensive strategy and scouting. Women's and men's sports. 4 cr.
