    Provides students with an introduction to the field of mathematics education, focusing primarily on the nature of mathematics teaching and learning and the current landscape of the profession of mathematics teaching. 2 cr.
  • SED ME 201: Methods for Tutoring Math Students
    Provides prospective tutors with knowledge of the big ideas of K-12 school mathematics, difficulties students may experience with these ideas, techniques for diagnosing the difficulties, and strategies for helping students improve their understanding and performance. 2 cr.
  • SED ME 503: Mathematical Reasoning in the Elementary Grades: Number Systems
    Designed for students majoring in elementary education, special education and deaf education who are preparing to become teachers of children in kindergarten through grade five. Topics include place value, whole numbers and operations, fractions, decimals, and elementary number theory. The emphasis is on exploring, explaining, and justifying mathematical ideas and connecting these ideas to the elementary classroom. 4 cr.
  • SED ME 504: Mathematical Reasoning in the Elementary Grades: Algebra, Geometry, & Statistics
    Designed for students majoring in elementary education, special education and deaf education who are preparing to become teachers of children in kindergarten through grade five. Topics include pre-algebra, proportional reasoning, geometry, measurement, and statistics. The emphasis is on exploring, explaining, and justifying mathematical ideas and connecting these ideas to the elementary classroom. This course focuses on topics in algebra, geometry, measurement and statistics. Students explore mathematics from the perspective of student and teacher. The emphasis is on making sense of key ideas in algebra and geometry and on exploring how student's understanding of these topics emerge and develop. Prereq: SED ME 503. 4 cr.
  • SED ME 506: Student-Teaching Half Practicum: Mathematics, 5-8

  • SED ME 507: Student-Teaching Practicum: Mathematics, 5-8
    Student teaching: a full- time experience in a selected school under joint supervision of a mentor supervising practitioner and a university program supervisor. Fldwk w/ seminar. Minimum 300 hours. 8 cr.

  • SED ME 530: Equitable Pedagogies in STEM Education
    Focuses on the examination of the teaching and learning of mathematics and science in urban schools. Considers how race, gender, class, language and culture affect students' opportunities to learn mathematics and science. Issues common to urban and rural districts are studied. Successful methodologies and projects for teaching mathematics and science to diverse populations are explored. 2 cr.
  • SED ME 545: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: Elementary
    This course aims to support pre-service teachers to learn how to teach mathematics in ways that enable 1st- 5th grade students to develop deep, conceptual understanding of key mathematical ideas, fluency with mathematical procedures, and productive mathematics identities. In particular, the focus is on learning to lead mathematical discussions that build on and advance children's mathematical ideas. Prereq: CAS MA 107 or SED ME503. 4 cr.
  • SED ME 546: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: Middle School
    Focuses on examining the role of a middle school mathematics teacher from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Topics include exploring strategies for maintaining productive learning environments, developing and implementing lessons effectively, and assessing students' mathematical thinking. Teaching enactments are an integral part of the course. 4 cr.
  • SED ME 547: Methods of Teaching Mathematics: High School
    Focuses on examining the role of a high school mathematics teacher from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Topics include exploring strategies for maintaining productive learning environments, developing and implementing lessons effectively, and assessing students' mathematical thinking.   • SED ME 558: Mathematics Curriculum: Program Issues, Trends
    Analysis of historical, mathematical, and psychological factors influencing pre-K-12 mathematics curricula. Focuses on national and international standards, research on learning and teaching with understanding, and integrated curricula. 4 cr.
  • SED ME 559: Mathematics for Teaching: Geometry
    Revisits geometry from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to teach geometry with understanding. Topics such as transformations, proof, Euclidean, and non-Euclidean geometries, manipulative materials, technology, standards, and curriculum in the teaching and learning of geometry. 4 cr.
  • SED ME 560: Mathematics for Teaching: Algebra
    Revisits school algebra from an advanced perspective, preparing teachers to teach algebra with understanding. Topics include variables, patterns, functions, linear algebra, manipulatives, technology, standards, and curriculum in the teaching and learning of algebra. 4 cr.
  • SED ME 563: Problem Solving in Mathematics
    Explores the teaching and learning of mathematics through solving sets of challenging problems. Topics include research on problem solving and how its design and implementation can be supported in the classroom. 4 cr.
  • SED ME 701: Learning Theory and Epistemology in Mathematics Education
    This seminar course for advanced graduate students explores the contemporary and historical research and theory with regard to the learning and knowing of mathematics. 4 cr.
