College of Communication Minors
The College of Communication (COM) offers three minors: Communication, Film & Television, and Journalism.
Prerequisite for all three minors: Students must complete COM CO 201 with the appropriate grade (C or better) BEFORE declaring a minor.
Students must obtain a signature from the Mass Communication, Advertising & Public Relations Department on the COM Minor Form after they complete the prerequisite course.
Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 in all courses taken toward the COM minor.
Students must be aware of any prerequisites when registering for classes.
Minor in Communication
Communication encompasses three focus areas:
- Advertising
- Communication studies
- Public relations
Six courses (not including COM CO 201) in total are required.
Two required courses:
- CM 331 Writing for Communication
- CM 321 Mass Communication Research or CM 380 Theory & Process of Communication
Plus four 4-credit, 300-level or higher courses in COM CM.
Minor in Film & Television
Prerequisite: Students must complete COM CO 201 with the appropriate grade (C or better) BEFORE declaring a minor.
Students must obtain the signature of the Film & Television Department on the COM Minor Form after they complete the prerequisite course.
Students must maintain a GPA of 2.0 in all courses taken toward the COM minor.
Film & Television encompasses four focus areas:
- Management
- Production
- Studies
- Writing
Six courses (not including COM CO 201) in total are required.
Two required courses:
- FT 310 Storytelling for Film & Television
- FT 303 Understanding Television or FT 360 Understanding Film
Plus four 4-credit, 300-level or higher courses in COM FT.
Please note: Production and lottery courses may not be available to minors.
Minor in Journalism
Journalism encompasses five focus areas:
- Broadcast
- Magazine
- News–editorial
- Online
- Photo
Six courses (not including COM CO 201) in total are required.
Two required courses:
- JO 307 Newswriting and Reporting I
- JO 357 History and Principles of Journalism or JO 525 Media Law and Ethics
Plus four 4-credit, 300-level or higher courses in COM JO.
Please note: Production and lottery courses may not be available to minors.
