• GRS LS 850: Seminar: Topics in Hispanic Literature
  Three topics are offered 2012/2013. Students may take one, two, or three for credit. Fall 2012 Section A1: Under Foreign Eyes: Cinematic Representations of Mexico. Cinematic representation of Mexico in films by Eisenstein, Buñuel, Kazan, Peckinpah, Malle, and Gleyzer. Students explore the shifting cultural and rhetorical contexts in which these polemical films were produced, distributed, and interpreted. Focus on Mexico's history and film criticism. Fall 2012 Section B1: Poetry and "Testimonio" in the Central American Conflicts. Two genres that played prominent roles in Central America in the late twentieth century. Poets include Ernesto Cardenal, Claribel Alegría, and Roque Dalton. Several classic examples of "testimonio," including works by Nobel Peace Prize winner Rigoberta Menchú and Omar Cabezas. Topic for Spring 2013: Between Languages: Genders and Genres in the Americas. How new definitions of Spanish arise from geographical mobility through books and films by works by Edgardo Cozarinsky, Juan Mandelbaum, Marcelo Birmajer, Luis Rafael Sánchez, Junot Díaz and Edith Grossman.
