Continuation

Students who have a cumulative grade point average of 2.00 or higher, have earned a minimum of 60 credits, completed all CGS core course requirements, and have proper electives, ordinarily continue within Boston University to the College of Arts & Sciences, Metropolitan College, some concentrations in College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College, or the School of Hospitality Administration.

A minimum 2.30 grade point average is required for continuation into the School of Management, the College of Communication, the College of Engineering, and some concentrations in College of Health & Rehabilitation Sciences: Sargent College (some concentrations in Sargent College may require a higher grade point average).

Such continuation does not hold for the School of Education, and the College of Fine Arts, each of which requires an intra-University transfer.

Students with a cumulative grade point average below 2.00 will not continue into a degree program at Boston University.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs at Boston University

All professional majors within the schools and colleges in the University require general education/liberal arts courses in addition to major or professional course requirements. The core curriculum of CGS has been designed to fulfill these general education/liberal arts requirements, freeing the student to concentrate on major/professional coursework during the junior and senior years.

Every student enrolled in the College of General Studies is a fully matriculated Boston University degree candidate who, upon successful completion of the CGS program, will have earned 48 semester credit hours within the CGS core curriculum (in humanities, natural science, rhetoric, and social science) and 16 elective credit hours in the other undergraduate programs of the University for a total of 64 credit hours. Only upon successful completion of the CGS program is a student eligible to continue in the other schools and colleges of Boston University.

Completion of these 64 credit hours places a student roughly halfway through the 128-credit hour requirements for nearly all of the baccalaureate degree programs within the University. For example, students continuing from the two-year College of General Studies program into the College of Arts & Sciences (CAS), the College of Communication (COM), and the School of Management (SMG) should complete their undergraduate degrees within the subsequent two years. Additional time may be required to complete certain majors or programs.
