An introduction to the principles of 2D design through graphic studio exercises involving use of varied media in black and white. Does not presuppose any artistic skills. D&P majors only, or permission of instructor required. Fall only. 2 credits. -
CFA TH 653: Master Class: Grads
Prereq: Grad standing or consent of instructor. A laboratory/workshop class which creates opportunities to explore individual and collaborative ideas and problem solving in the creation of theatre. Emphasis placed on the student's personal discovery of their own unique approach to their work and their involvement in the larger community of theatre artists. Fall semester. 2 credits. -

An intensive survey covering the history of and significant cultural expression in dress in Western Civilization. Work involves research projects with emphasis on color, materials, manufacture, and application toward a definition of styles. Area libraries and museums used as class resources. CFA TH 663: Scene Design Studio 1
Fundamentals of set design theory; basic mechanical and conceptual solutions for the proscenium theatre; development of presentational and research skills. Readings and projects incorporate all theatre genres, ballet, dance, opera, television, and film. Fall semester. 3 credits. -
CFA TH 665: Scene Painting 1
Prereq: Consent of instructor. Extension of exposure to materials and tools in Scene Painting. Exercises in general lay-in and texture techniques, and beginning work in nature studies. Fall semester. 2 credits. -

CFA TH 669: Tech Prod Studio 1
Prereq: Consent of instructor. The primary focus is on task of communicating in projection view drafting for construction purposes. The drafting is applied to projects constructed in steel. During the class period, construction decision-making is reviewed. Fundamentals of metal work and the craft of welding are learned. Fall semester. 3 credits. -
CFA TH 671: Theatrical Welding 1
An introduction to welding technology, explaining and outlining welding safety and the best welding practices. The course will cover cutting, drilling, and assembling mild steel for theatrical scenery construction. Fall semester. 2 credits. -
CFA TH 675: Costume Design Studio 1
Prereq: Consent of instructor. Fundamentals of costume design. Exercises focus on analysis-designing from the inside out. Covers a range of visual, written, and verbal techniques of communication; script analysis, style, research techniques, and rendering skills. Readings and projects may incorporate all theatre genres. Fall semester. 3 credits. -

CFA TH 679: Costume Production Studio 1
Prereq: Consent of instructor. An in-depth study of pattern making for the female silhouette. Draping and flat patterning techniques are augmented with historical research in pattern development. The student develops a thorough understanding of the form and function of each element of the female costume. Fall semester. 3 credits. -
CFA TH 681: Intro to Textiles
The course will cover identification and use of a variety of different fabrics including theatrical goods. It will include a brief history of textiles in conjunction with a focused overview of patterns, colors, and fibers that developed and were used over a period of time as a result of growth in the industry. Scheduled trips to the Textile Museum in Lowell and the Museum of Fine Arts will support and enhance the student's experience with the subject. Fall in odd numbered FY. 1 credit. -
CFA TH 683: Lighting Design Studio 1
Prereq: Consent of instructor. Introduction to the art and craft of lighting design for the stage. Explores the lighting design process, how to develop lighting ideas, concepts, and visual images from a text, and how to support those ideas to the point of realization. Required Labs will supplement class work with hands-on activities. Fall semester. 3 credits.
