  • CFA TH 785: Light and Movement
    Prereq: consent of instructor. A course intended for lighting designers, actors, directors, and dancers to develop theatrical work integrating light and movement. The goal of the course is to provide a workshop environment that fosters the development of new forms of theatrical expression involving light and movement. Weekly assignments involve light sources, movement, and light conventions involving space, storytelling involving light and movement. Rehearsal times on Sundays and Monday evenings expected outside of regular class times. Fall semester. 2 credits.
  • CFA TH 789: Systems Design 1 - FY 13, FY 15
    Prereq: consent of instructor. Audio systems, video systems, and intercom systems will be examined from input to output in terms of signal flow and interconnection practices, and how they are used. Offered in odd numbered FY. Fall semester. 3 credits.
  • CFA TH 797: Production
    Prereq: CFA TH698. Each semester that a second year graduate Design & Production MFA candidate is in residence at SOT, he/she is required to enroll in an appropriate section of Production. Meets late afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends. Specific design and shop work in the mounting of student or professional productions. Does not include off-crew design work. Fall semester. 1 credit per semester assignment.

  • CFA TH 855: History of Period Styles 3
    A survey covering the history of social, political and cultural movements and the expression of those movements through architecture, interior decoration, furniture, and dress in major civilizations. Work involves research projects and presentations. Fall semester. 3 credits.
  • CFA TH 859: Photoshop 1
    Studio work in basic to advanced Adobe Photoshop techniques. Project work is designed to accommodate skill level. Fall semester. 1 credit.
  • CFA TH 863: Scene Design Studio 5
    Prereq: CFA DR758 or CFA TH764 or consent of instructor. Advanced theoretical and practical design training; project work weighted toward individual student needs, and realistic preparation for a career in costume design. Readings and projects incorporate multiple theatre genres, ballet, dance, and opera, depending on individuals in the class. Fall semester. 3 credits.
  • CFA TH 869: Tech Prod Studio 5
    Prereq: CFA DR762 or CFA TH770 or consent of instructor. Large scale project planning and drafting, using abstract objects and producing them as scenery both on paper and in the shop. The class also addresses problem solving for scenery on raked stages and complete design for a modular full-stage rake that can be struck, stored, and installed easily. Fall semester. 3 credits.
  • CFA TH 875: Costume Design Studio 5
    Prereq: CFA DR774 or CFA TH776 or consent of instructor. Advanced theoretical and practical design training; project work weighted toward individual student needs, and realistic preparation for a career in costume design. Readings and projects incorporate multiple theatre genres, ballet, dance, and opera, depending on individuals in the class. Fall semester. 3 credits.
  • CFA TH 877: Costume Rendering 1
    Prereq: advisor recommendation or consent of instructor. Advanced work in figure drawing; specific rendering techniques for costume design. May be repeated for credit. Fall semester. 1 credit.
  • CFA TH 879: Cost Prod Studio 5
    Prereq: CFA DR776 or CFA TH780 or consent of instructor. Continues the study of flat patterning and draping through individual projects. Silhouette, line, and proportion become essential elements in the development of complete muslin reproductions. The study of the form and function of period underpinnings is stressed. Fall semester. 3 credits.
  • CFA TH 881: Millinery 1 - FY 11, 13
    Prereq: CFA DR154 or CFA TH152 or consent of instructor. Millinery crafts are learned through various projects on different styles of design. Skills might include: straw, backram, wire, paper, and felt. Offered in on numbered FY. Fall semester. 1 credit.
  • CFA TH 883: Lighting Design Studio 5
    Prereq: CFA DR768 or CFA TH784 or consent of instructor. An in-depth look at the functions and qualities of light and how to apply them in complex ways within a lighting design for the stage. Focus will be placed on your continuing development as a theater artist and on expanding your knowledge of related design concepts, performance genres, and venues. Development of professional level design work and portfolio material will be expected. Fall semester. 3 credits.
  • CFA TH 897: Production
    Prereq: CFA TH798. Each semester that a third year graduate Design & Production MFA candidate is in residence at SOT, he/she is required to enroll in an appropriate section of Production. Meets late afternoons, evenings, and/or weekends. Specific design and shop work in the mounting of student or professional productions. Does not include off-crew design work. Fall semester. 1 credit per semester assignment.

  • CFA TH 951: Grad Project
    Prereq: graduate standing, consent of instructor. Meets as arranged. A major independent project presented to the faculty as the final requirement for the Master of Fine Arts degree. The project is chosen with approval of the faculty and presented on a schedule established by the School. A committee of three follow progress of the project.
  • CFA TH 953: Grad Design Seminar
    A graduate level seminar centering on the business of theatre. Fall semester. Variable credit.
