Declaring or Changing a Concentration/Major

University Policy

Students must declare a concentration before registering for their junior year. To declare or to change an already declared concentration, students must complete a Program Change form, obtainable from their school or college.

School of Law Policy

As the practice of law becomes increasingly specialized, today’s lawyer needs advanced skills to stay ahead of rapidly changing laws and regulations. At Boston University School of Law, students can develop these skills by concentrating their studies in one of these specialized fields:

• Business Organizations and Finance Law
• Health Law
• Intellectual Property Law
• International Law
• Litigation and Dispute Resolution

By pursuing a concentration, students can engage in advanced, in-depth study with the leading scholars and practitioners in a specific field, without having to pursue an advanced degree. Students are then equipped with the specialized legal training and tools that can give them a powerful advantage in the marketplace.

Typically, students begin a concentration in their second year but may formally declare a concentration any time in their three years of study. A faculty advisor who has specialized expertise in a given area of the law is assigned to each concentration to offer students advice throughout their course of study. Once students have decided to pursue a concentration, they should complete an Intent to Concentrate form, available online or from the School of Law Registrar’s Office.
