CAS NE 101: Introduction to Neuroscience
An introduction to the biological basis of behavior and cognition. Includes theoretical and practical foundations rooted in psychology, biology, neuropharmacology, and clinical sciences (e.g., neurology and neuropsychiatry). Neuroethical dilemmas are highlighted and integrated when relevant to discussion topics. -
CAS NE 102: Introduction to Cellular and Molecular Biology
A cellular and molecular approach to nervous system function. Includes molecular and genetic basis of neurons; structure and function of ion channels, synapses, and glia; mechanisms of signal transduction; neuroendocrinology; and sensory systems and transduction. Project labs focused on anatomy and physiology of neurons. -

CAS NE 202: Introduction to Cognitive Neuroscience
Cognitive neuroscience seeks to understand the brain basis of cognition. This course introduces research methods and human neuroanatomy, and provides a survey of topics including learning and memory, attention, perception, language, social cognition, and executive function. Also offered as CAS PS 202. -
CAS NE 203: Principles of Neuroscience with Lab
Fundamentals of the nervous system, emphasizing synaptic transmission; hierarchical organization; automatic nervous system; mechanisms of sensory perception; reflexes and motor function; biorhythms; and neural mechanisms of feeding, mating, learning, and memory. Project labs focus on animal behavior, electrophysiology, and learning and memory. Lecture portion meets with CAS BI 325. -

Introduction to important concepts in cognitive neuroscience and computational modeling of biological neural systems. Combines a systems-level overview of brain function with an introduction to modeling of brain and behavior using neural networks. Also offered as CAS CN 210. -

CAS NE 340: Introduction to Computational Models of Skilled Decision and Action
Humans are facile skill learners. What brain circuits and learning mechanisms enable skilled selection of plans and enactment of the plans chosen? Integrates interdisciplinary efforts to understand brain functions well enough to allow accurate computer simulations of skill learning. Also offered as CAS CN 340. -
CAS NE 360: Introduction to Computational Neuroscience of Speech, Language, and Hearing
Introduces the foundations of auditory perception including the mammalian auditory pathway, speech and language perception, links with speech production, auditory scene analysis, and music perception from a computational perspective. CAS NS 223: Nautical Science
An introduction to the technologies of operation at sea. The concepts of navigation (piloting, celestial, and electronic), naval architecture, ship construction, marine engineering systems, and the physics of sail are taught from their bases in astronomy, mathematics, and physics. -
CAS NS 224: Practical Oceanographic Research
This course in oceanography is designed to provide the student with a knowledge of the equipment and methodology used in the study of the oceans. Each student collects and analyzes data in support of a research project in a selected aspect of oceanography aboard the SSV Westward or SSV Corwith Cramer. -
CAS NS 320: Ocean Science and Public Policy
Examines the connections among science, culture, and marine related public policy. Through a case study of a single policy issue, explores the power, use, and limitations of science and the scientist's voice in determining ocean policy.
