• CAS LG 455: Twentieth-Century Culture: Before 1945
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LG 350.
  Surveys a period of critical change and tremendous vitality in German-speaking culture and literature. Works by Rilke, Hofmannsthal, Mann, Kafka, Brecht, and others. Topics in politics, society, film, the arts. Practice in writing and interpretation.
• CAS LG 464: German Cinema
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LG 350.
  Meets with CAS LG 287. History of German cinema, with in-depth exploration of a major period (Weimar, Third Reich, New German Cinema). Basics of film terminology and theory, analysis of film as film. Examination of the cultural and political conditions of production. Weekly screenings. Students contract to do a determined number of readings in German. Cannot be taken for credit by students who have completed CAS LG 287.

• CAS LH 111: First-Semester Hebrew
  Introduction to modern Hebrew, including a balanced treatment of the basic language skills: reading, writing, listening, and speaking.
• CAS LH 112: Second-Semester Hebrew
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LH 111; or placement test results.
  A continuation of CAS LH 111 with more conversation and higher-level skills development. Conducted largely in Hebrew.
• CAS LH 117: Biblical Hebrew 1
  Introduction to Biblical Hebrew, including balanced treatment of vocabulary, grammar, and vocalization. No prior study of Modern or Biblical Hebrew presumed. Does not count towards CAS language requirement.
• CAS LH 139: Intensive First-Year Hebrew
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: Placement examination results.
  Covers all material in CAS LH 111 and 112. Main patterns of grammar, conversation, and written exercises. If you have taken LH 111, 112, or a more advanced college-level course, you cannot take this course for credit.
• CAS LH 211: Third-Semester Hebrew
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LH 112; or placement test results.
  Reinforces and extends skills in reading, conversation, writing, and grammar. Conducted in Hebrew.
• CAS LH 212: Fourth-Semester Hebrew
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LH 211; or placement test results.
  Stresses expanding conversation, grammar, and literary skills, enabling students to deal with most Hebrew material, ancient as well as contemporary. Conducted in Hebrew. Satisfactory completion of CAS LH 212 fulfills the CAS language requirement.
• CAS LH 250: Masterpieces of Modern Hebrew Literature (in English translation)
  Narrative prose and poetry of major writers from the revival of Hebrew culture in nineteenth-century Eastern Europe to present-day Israel, including works of Bialik, Agnon, Amichai, and Yehoshua. Special focus on the struggle for modern identity in the domains of family, nation, and religion. Carries humanities divisional credit in CAS.
• CAS LH 282: Agnon and Oz: In Search of Modernity (in English translation)
  The one emerging from the old world of premodern Europe, the other raised in modern Israel, S.Y. Agnon and A. Oz represent the extremes of modern Hebrew fiction. Yet both seek the meaning of being modern in a Jewish context.

  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LH 212; or placement test results.
  Reading in selected literary and non-literary materials. Includes short stories, news media and drama, and discussion and analysis of issues in Hebrew to acquire a mastery of modern Hebrew language.
• CAS LH 312: Sixth-Semester Hebrew
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LH 311; or placement test results.
  Readings in selected modern and classical texts, including short stories, drama, journals, poetry, and selections from biblical and medieval works to acquire mastery of the full range of Hebrew language usages and styles. Conducted in Hebrew.
• CAS LH 350: Hebrew Narrative: Biblical and Modern
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LH 212.
  Narrative techniques in the Bible and in modern Hebrew texts. Selections from Genesis II, Samuel, and the book of Jonah, as well as short stories by Agnon, Appelfeld, Yehoshua, and others. Carries humanities divisional credit in CAS.
• CAS LH 351: Styles and Meaning of Hebrew Poetry: Modern Hebrew Poetry
  Undergraduate Prerequisites: CAS LH 312; or placement eaxamination.
  An introduction to contemporary Hebrew poetry and its roots, concentrating on both style and message. Readings include Bialik, Tshernichovski, Rahel, Greenberg, Shlonsky, Alterman, Goldberg, Ratosh, Pagis, Gilboa, Amihai and Zach.

  For beginners only, or placement examination results. Grammar, conversation practice, written exercises, and compositions. Conducted in Italian. Lab required. Four hours weekly. (If CAS LI 131 or a more advanced college-level course has been completed, this course cannot be taken for credit.)
