New Director to Serve the Underserved

"Alain Montegut, a MED associate professor, is the new director of the Global Health Primary Care Initiative."

"

The department of family medicine at Boston Medical Center receives inquiries from countries around the world about how to give the underserved better access to health care. It is now up to Alain Montegut to investigate those requests.

“Our goal really is to try to partner with governmental and nongovernmental organizations that want to improve their primary care infrastructure,” says Montegut, the new director of the department’s Global Health Primary Care Initiative and a School of Medicine associate professor of family medicine.

Montegut came to BU on July 1 from the Maine Medical Center in Portland, where he was the family medicine residency program director.

Over the last 10 years, he has worked in Southeast Asia, developing training programs in family medicine and working to improve access to primary care in rural areas

Montegut received a medical degree from the University of California, Los Angeles, School of Medicine and completed his family medicine residency at Brown University Memorial Hospital. He is a member of the board of directors of the American Board of Family Medicine and a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians Center for International Health Initiatives. He recently was elected president of the North American Region of the World Organization of Family Doctors.
