Dr. Berkowitz is a founding faculty member of BU’s PA Program and has been serving the institution since 2012. Dr. Berkowitz received his Physician Assistant and Master’s of Science degrees at the Touro College School of Health Sciences in New York. He began working as a physician assistant in intensive care at the Montefiore Medical Center in Bronx, NY where he concentrated on neurosurgical and surgical critical care. Dr. Berkowitz moved to Pittsburgh, PA in 2008 to join their Gamma Knife Radiosurgery team in the Department of Neurological Surgery of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center, while he completed his doctoral training in epidemiology through the University of Pittsburgh Graduate School of Public Health.
Dr. Berkowitz is the Director of Research for the Physician Assistant Program. He created the program’s research curriculum which consists of coursework, journal clubs, and the thesis project. Dr. Berkowitz performs research related to healthcare services, medical education, and neurosurgery. He is a member of the national Physician Assistant Education Association Research Council. He is also a board member of the Massachusetts Association of Physician Assistants. He is involved in healthcare policy and advocacy both at home and abroad. He continues to practice in neurosurgery part-time at Boston Medical Center.
