CLINICAL RESEARCH TRAINING (CREST) Program

As new scientific advances pour out of our laboratories, it has become critical that we train a cadre of clinical investigators who know how to transfer those advances from the lab bench to the patient’s bedside in the fullest, safest and most ethical manner possible. The Clinical Research Training Program will enable Boston University to become one of the leading institutions in the country in providing such training.

The CREST program brings together faculty and fellows from throughout Boston University including its schools of medicine, dentistry and public health, Boston Medical Center, the Sargent College of Allied Health Professions and other key laboratories and investigators on the Charles River Campus.

The CREST (Clinical Research Training) Program is under the auspices of the Training and Education Function of the CTSI. As described above, since 1999 to present, with support from the NIH, the CREST program has trained and mentored fellows and junior faculty interested in pursuing clinical research careers. The primary components of the CREST program at BUSM, include a biweekly seminar, research and career mentoring, an IRB internship and course work leading to an advanced degree at BUSPH and BUSM’s MACI Program.

Students with a doctoral degree in the health sciences (M.D, D.D.S., D.M.D., or Ph.D.) are eligible to apply to the CREST program for comprehensive training in clinical research including epidemiology, clinical epidemiology, health services research, biobehavioral research and translational research.

PLEASE NOTE: those with “J” visas are not eligible for this program.

The goal of the CREST program is to provide educational support and opportunities for persons interested in a clinical research career.

The CREST Program has 6 elements:

  1. Regular attendance at the Noon CREST seminars (2nd and 4th Tuesdays, Sept through June). CREST seminars provide information on research methodologies and clinical research at Boston University. Seventy (70%) minimum seminars attendance required. To view PowerPoint presentations of past CREST seminars click here. To view the current seminar schedule, click here.
  2. If you are matriculating in a degree program at the Boston University School of Public Health or the Master of Arts in Clinical Investigation (MACI) Program at the Boston University School of Medicine that requires at least 32 credits for graduation, CREST will provide tuition scholarship credits to the School of Public Health or School of Medicine consisting of up to 8 credits per year maximum for a total 16 credits (over 2+years). If you already have a degree and wish to take additional courses, we will provide scholarship for 1/2 of the credits you need. We expect that you or your department will cover the balance of your degree program tuition/expenses.
  3. A mentored research project including presenting your research at a CREST seminar.
  4. An IRB internship with credits. You will receive details of the internship under separate cover.
  5. A talk about your ongoing research each year of your participation in the program.
  6. Optional: Mentoring sessions by our CREST Program faculty (upon request).
