There are 2 comments on POV: Robert Pinsky Extols the Virtues of Cape Cod

  1. I enjoyed reading your piece and find it quite telling of the human relationship with nature as well. Just as a tourist economy depends on the satisfaction of its visitors, so too does the fate of the natural environment. You mention the predatory sharks and tourist disdain for winters on Cape Cod – it seems that only when we extract value from a landscape do we deem it worth protecting. It’s alarming because many of the ecosystems we can’t physically experience or dislike for aesthetic purposes are the most important on Earth. Still, there’s no mention of the dangers of shoreline erosion on Cape Cod because that’s not what tourists want to hear. Yet if not heard, in time there will be no substantial shoreline for tourists to visit. It’s an interesting paradox of keeping quiet and brings up many economy-environment-enjoyment conflicts. I appreciate the insight you offer in your article and your recognition of Cape Cod in all its seasons.
