How to be an Outstanding Student Intern

Sana Johnson
Spring 2016

As the job market matures, there is increased pressure on applicants to have an impressive list of work experience. For college students, this often results in taking on internship positions during the school year. Finding a part-time internship is a great way to build your professional skills and gain insight into career interests, but it can be difficult to balance your work schedule with your academic course load. Here are some tips to find a balance between the two and maximize your student intern experience:

1. Use a planner/calendar

I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to organize your time. Missing deadlines does not feel great, but you can easily avoid it by writing everything down! Figure out what type of time management system works for you. You can use an online resource like Google Calendar or iCal, or use old fashioned pen and paper. Whatever method you chose, stick with it! As a first step, I suggest combing through ALL of your syllabi / work schedules and filling in important deadlines and exam dates on your calendar. This will provide you will a big picture view of the semester. From there you can set personal deadlines to keep yourself on track. More

Time Management When There’s Little Time to Manage

Danielle Cantey
Fall 2015

As college students, we are often told that time management is the key to success. We often juggle school, clubs, organizations, and even jobs and internships. As a sophomore at BU, I worked three jobs, took extra classes, and was still actively involved in two cubs. While that semester was challenging to say the least, I learned a LOT about effective time management and how to realistically envision my goals. As part of the BUDC program, we are afforded wonderful opportunities to grow, work, learn, explore and connect. Fitting all of these experiences into fifteen short weeks can be a challenge, but here are some tips to help you effectively manage your time. More

Angela Zhang

Since you are reading this blog, you probably are thinking about applying to the BUDC program, which I strongly encourage you to do so. However, you should get ready to be busy, very busy, especially if you are here for the summer. If you only take two classes, or an internship, it is fine. But if you are like me, taking two mandatory classes and two internships your schedule is more intense, or say, crazier. Besides the academic and career aspects, you also want to have fun and enjoy the city. How to balance these things is a big challenge.

As a person who keeps busy for quite a long time, I figured out some tips that can help deal with a busy schedule:

The Roses and Thorns of Working Remotely

Lindsey Hover
Summer 2015

On my first day as a young working professional in Washington, DC, I sat behind my computer screen and watched as my peers hastily cooked their breakfasts, suited up, and headed out to begin their commutes. Sitting there in my sweatpants, I felt a mild jealousy, glamorizing the suits and skirts, and the half hour commute to work as emblematic of a “real life” that I, as a remote worker on two jobs, was missing.

1. Buy an agenda or planner

Between your internship and classes you will be very busy throughout the semester. It is vital you write the important things down so you know when your assignments or deadlines are coming up. You don’t forget to do them.

2. Create a healthy balance between work, class and a social life

Even if you are very busy, remember to make time to enjoy yourself in DC because the city has so much to offer! It is important to give yourself a break from the chaos of work and class to go out and explore. Tip: maintain a healthy balance and don’t let your social life get in the way of your professional and academic development.
