The only reason I chose to come to this Washington study abroad program was because I got an internship at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). More

How to be an Outstanding Student Intern

Spring 2016
As the job market matures, there is increased pressure on applicants to have an impressive list of work experience. For college students, this often results in taking on internship positions during the school year. Finding a part-time internship is a great way to build your professional skills and gain insight into career interests, but it can be difficult to balance your work schedule with your academic course load. Here are some tips to find a balance between the two and maximize your student intern experience:
1. Use a planner/calendar
I cannot stress enough how important it is for you to organize your time. Missing deadlines does not feel great, but you can easily avoid it by writing everything down! Figure out what type of time management system works for you. You can use an online resource like Google Calendar or iCal, or use old fashioned pen and paper. Whatever method you chose, stick with it! As a first step, I suggest combing through ALL of your syllabi / work schedules and filling in important deadlines and exam dates on your calendar. This will provide you will a big picture view of the semester. From there you can set personal deadlines to keep yourself on track. More

3 Tips While Applying to Internships
By Alejandro Herreria
Spring 2015
Coming into this program, I had recently switched majors two semesters prior and I really had not had much experience with anything other than a clinical-type internship, so I knew that whatever internship I got into, it would be different than anything I had ever experienced. Not only that, but I was leaving my Boston University home and adapting to a completely new schedule, along with a new city. I’m happy to say that everything turned out okay, as I ended up interning at a mid-sized healthcare nonprofit just north of DC in Silver Spring, Maryland. Chelsea and the rest of the team here at BU Washington, DC will do an excellent job aiding you in finding an internship, but I just wanted to create a quick list of things to remember while applying for internships.

How were your first two months of the semester in Washington? How does it compare to the first few weeks or months of a semester on campus?

Fall 2014
My first two months in Washington D.C. were definitely action packed. Although I didn’t leave the country for my “abroad” experience, the feeling was very similar – there was so much to see and so many places to explore. I’ve been to D.C. in the past, but it’s different seeing it independently, without your family or friends. Washington, as a city, is so different culturally from Boston. The people are different, the layout out of the city is different, and most importantly, the metro system is different (and it’s super embarrassing when you accidentally call it “the T”… even two months into the semester). Besides the new and temporary location, my routine is completely different. I work every morning and take classes every night. I’m way busier than I ever was on campus. I had maintained a job while going to school in Boston… but not like this, not at this pace.
