How Does Your Internship Relate To Your Major?

I have spent my semester interning at the United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF); a Congressionally appointed, nonpartisan, government agency committed to monitoring religious violence across the world. As an International Relations major, it has been a great experience to see how a U.S. government agency works with international religious leaders, prime ministers, and ambassadors to make sure that basic human rights and religious freedom are a reality for all people. Countless hours of research go into the Commission’s annual report, and I’m very lucky to be a part of the work that the staff and Commissioners do to make religious freedom a priority in America. After all, the global effort to uphold human rights is one of the reasons why I love being an International Relations major.

I’m working as a social media intern at 100Reporters, a nonprofit investigative reporting organization in Washington DC. I’ve studied Business for three years, and have just started pursuing a second degree in Public Relations in the spring semester (2014). When I was applying to different internship positions, a question often arose: What are the advantages, if any, of double-majoring in Business and PR?

As an International Relations major with a concentration in foreign policy and security studies as well as an Arabic minor, I knew that coming to Washington for an internship would be a great opportunity to finally gain real world experience in these areas. I realized that Boston had some, but not a lot of related opportunities that I could take advantage of during the summer before my senior year. So after applying for many internships, I finally received one with the National Defense University.

My internship at Fox 5 News has everything to do with my major, broadcast journalism. I aspire to become a television news reporter. Inside the Fox newsroom, I am surrounded by seasoned journalists who tell compelling stories. Many times, I’m able to accompany reporters on their assignments. I get to be a part of the news production process from start to finish.
In the morning, I attend a daily meeting where producers, reporters, writers, assignment editors, the news director and other team members develop the content for the evening newscast. Reporters pitch stories and many times are assigned to breaking news stories. The news team also decides what other stories they will talk about in the newscast and possible guests they may want to bring in to elaborate on a topic.

Coming to DC as an intern for the summer I had no idea what to expect, and truth be told, part of me was still mourning the fact that I wouldn’t be going to London instead. As a rising senior at Boston University, I knew I needed to get more internship experience to be better prepared for graduation and any graduate program after that. Being that I am a pre-med, Human Physiology major I never really I thought I had many internship options besides laboratory work, but I decided to take my chances and apply to the internship program anyway.

With the energy sector dominating the top 5 companies in Monday’s Forbes 500 rankings, it is pivotal to understand the relationship between energy and climate. That is, the sources in which the U.S. obtains the source for all industry, productivity, and transportation, is ultimately reflected upon the growing issue of anthropocentric climate change. Since the industrial revolution, there has undeniably been an increased level of carbon emissions, deforestation, land use change, sea level rise, and other activities harmful to biodiversity and the environment. A midst all political quarrels in Washington, climate change continues to be largest threat to humanity, as it directly affects agriculture, precipitation patterns, and other key elements of which our society depends on today.

In a city full of interns studying subjects such as political science or international relations I often get looked at weirdly when I say that I am studying hospitality administration. People become even more surprised to hear that my internship consists of planning meetings and events at a military university. I must admit that when I was offered an internship at National Defense University I was a bit apprehensive about how much it would actually relate to event planning. However, with my time at NDU coming to an end I can completely say that I have had great experiences that I will take with me for the rest of my career in the hospitality industry.
