All volunteers, they were the first black military airmen in America and fought in World War II but were still widely discriminated against. President Bush saluted the Airmen during the ceremony, “For all the unreturned salutes and unforgivable indignities,” endured during their service.

Diane Baker, a 60-year-old Dallas native, spends a cold January day cleaning the streets of D.C. as punishment for her arrest in September after crossing a police line to sit on the steps of the Senate in protest of the Iraq war. Baker has a hereditary central nervous system disorder that causes a progressive decrease in muscle control.
