6 Political Newsletters You Should Sign Up For Immediately
Kyle Plantz
Fall 2015
So now you’re in Washington, when all of a sudden you realize you have no idea what’s going on in the world of politics. Well, have no fear because I am here…to rhyme…and tell you what online newsletters you should get in your inbox and read every day. You’ll become a politico in no time.
The New York Times- First Draft on Politics
If you’re looking for an easy-to-read newsletter that will give you the basic political rundown of the day, then look no further than the NYT. Their political morning newsletter explains in layman’s terms everything you need to know that’s happening in Washington and on the campaign trail. Sign up here.
Politico Playbook
If you need to know what’s happening inside the Beltway — like waaaay inside — then there’s Playbook, a daily email from Politico’s Mike Allen. It’s a lengthy read, and pretty wonky, but it’s the place where all DC insiders go each morning. Sign up here.

Washington Post- The Daily 202
The Daily 202 gives you all the political news you want AND MORE. This newsletter is also lengthy, but you’ll become a better person after reading it. The newsletter gives you the biggest news of the day, stories you missed because you were sleeping, key political players to watch, and all the hilarious tweets and gifs you could ask for. Sign up here.
The Boston Globe- Ground Game/Capital
If you miss Boston a little bit, subscribe to The Boston Globe’s Ground Game and Capital newsletters. The Globe kills the game (pun maybe intended) with their New England political coverage. Ground Game, a daily newsletter focuses on everything about the election, while Capital gives you a weekly summary on what’s happening at the State House. Sign up here for Ground Game and here for Capital.
The Hill Overnight Newsletters
I might be biased on this one because I interned for The Hill, but they do have great political news. Subscribe to their various newsletters that will hit your inbox around dinnertime. You can select different topics you’re interested in like cybersecurity, energy/environment, and healthcare, among others. They also have a print paper when Congress is in session and it’s free to pick up! To sign up, go to the homepage and click on the policy section.
CNN Politics- Nightcap
Before bed, make sure you get a Nightcap. No, no, not the alcoholic beverage (unless you’re 21, then go ahead). I meant the newsletter from CNN Politics. This will hit your inbox around bedtime and it’s a good way to summarize what happened in the day and what you can look forward to tomorrow. Sign up here.
Kyle is a senior studying journalism, history, and political science and is interning for The Hill publication.
