Would you vote to re-elect your current representative?

The Case Against Cory Booker

By Michael Neminski
Spring 2014

When I originally signed up to write this blog post, I selected the question “Would you vote to reelect your current representative?.”  Yet the ever-changing nature of congressional politics has even impacted the question, as my representative, Rush Holt (D-NJ) has chosen to retire at the end of his term.  Therefore I will write about another race going on in my wonderful state, and that is the race for US Senate.  In this race, Cory Booker (D-NJ), who won a special election last October, will be seeking reelection.  Therefore, for this post I will be focusing on if Cory Booker deserves reelection.

Would not vote to re-elect him.

While there is no doubt in my mind that Cory Booker is a great person, and even a borderline superhero, I would not vote to reelect him in the upcoming Senate Election.  Cory Booker is simply all about the flair, while his dramatic speeches and publicity stunts draw large amounts of attention; he has been nothing but a failure at the policy level.  While Booker brought hope to the collapsed city of Newark with his election, his policy did nothing once so ever to make the city a better place.  The city is just as, if not more dangerous and poverty stricken than it was when he first took office as mayor.  Sure he lived off of food stamps for a while to show how difficult it is, but what did that do for the people of Newark?  Booker has and will run on his record, a record that simply has nothing but a few publicity stunts on it.

In addition, this election is much more than the ideals and policies of two people, it is about the ideals and policies of two parties.  Cory Booker has been the advocate and occasional poster child for failed policies, which have stopped our economy from emerging from the “Great Recession.”  Government regulation, especially Obamacare have caused our economy to stall.  If the United States is to jump-start its economy, it can no longer continue on its current path.  With Cory Booker still in office, this is exactly what will happen.
