Established in 2019, the MFA in Literary Translation grows out of a long tradition of teaching translation at Boston University going back to 1978, when BU began hosting regular lectures with prominent invited speakers in translation and translation studies. Building on that foundation, the program today is committed to training a new generation of literary translators equipped with a complete range of linguistic, theoretical, and critical skills.

In 2024, the program established eight brand-new BA to MFA degree programs for undergraduate students interested in applying their language studies to translation and deepening their knowledge of theory.

The Program continues to host the Translation Seminar Lecture Series each spring, welcoming accomplished translators and literary figures to Boston University’s campus.
