Knapping Obsidian*

In the February 12 Palaeolithic Archaeology class, Anson Zhu (CAS’27) (right) and Curtis Runnels, a CAS archaeology professor, knapped obsidian, a volcanic glass, with elk antlers. The lesson was an effort to replicate an Acheulean handaxe, which early human ancestors made during the Lower Palaeolithic period across Africa, Europe, and parts of Asia. Photo by Cydney Scott
