Our paper “Plasmonic Photoreactors-Coated Plastic Tubing as Combined-Active-and-Passive Antimicrobial Flow Sterilizer” is accepted by J. Mater. Chem. B.

In this work, we collaborated with Prof. Pinghua Liu’s group and developed a combined-active-and-passive antibacterial coating for plastic surfaces. We demonstrate in this work efficient flow-sterilization of bacteria with a flow sterilizer based on coated plastic tubing, and effective inhibition of biofilm growth on coated plastic slides with ambient light. We also show that the detrimental effect of the coating is selective against microbial pathogens over mammalian cells, and does not harm the function of mammal-derived proteins. This work is meaningful for development of alternative means of sterilization of precious biologics and of fluids and edibles under severe conditions.
