The Best PR Podcasts To Keep You In The Know

By: Llariley Coplin, Account Supervisor

I think it is safe to say that most aspiring and practicing PR professionals have this one thing embedded into their daily routine — checking the news. Whether you are studying PR or are already a practitioner, one thing we all know about the industry is that staying up-to-date with trends, current events, and the niche news that affect our particular organizations or clients is part of the job description.

The landscape can change without warning, and we must handle it when it does, pivoting and adjusting when necessary. To do this, we must be well-versed in the affairs around us, from trending topics to all things industry. However, with our profession’s fast-paced nature and the never-ending news cycle, we can probably all agree that this is easier said than done.

But what if I told you that there was a way to make staying updated easier? I have compiled a list of my top five favorite PR podcasts that never fail to keep me in the know and engaged in the ever-changing PR world. Whether you are ending the semester or simply looking to delve into the world of PR, these podcasts have got your back.

  • #FuturePRoof Podcast

The #FuturePRoof, hosted by Sara Hall and Stephen Waddington, talks about marketing, public relations, and social media. They discuss hot topic events and how it affects related industries.

My all-time favorite episode is “The Future of Customer Service,” featuring Peter Shankman. He talks about how human-centered and customer-oriented companies will not only withstand the hurdles of COVID-19 better than their competitors but experience more tremendous success in the future. If you have ever read the Marketing Rebellion: The Most Human Company Wins by Mark W. Schaefer, this episode is the perfect reminder of all the book’s key messages. If you haven’t read the book, listen to this episode to get a glimpse into customer-related marketing/PR and future predictions.

  • The Spin Sucks

Gini Dietrich from The Spin Sucks discusses everything in the communications world and helps optimize PR, marketing, and advertising as the industries change and become more integrated.

If there is one The Spin Sucks episode you must listen to, it is “The Importance of Strategic Planning,” where Gini emphasizes the importance of objectives. She talks about how the best communication plans define an organization’s success by establishing measurable expectations — emphasis on the measurable.

  • The PR Week

PR Week is the center of all news and commentary centered in PR. If you haven’t heard of PRWeek.com, I genuinely urge you to go check that out. But, if you do not have the time to scroll and read or are on your daily commute, this podcast is the perfect synthesize of the news you need to hear.

Check out their most recent episode (as of December 11, 2020) with Amgen’s Judy Gawlik Brown, one of The PR Week‘s many guests, to listen about the present stance of COVID-19 and the future of PR office culture. And as always, it ends with one of my favorite features, the latest need-to-know news.

  • For Immediate Release

In For Immediate Release, Neville Hobson and Shel Holtz discuss all hot topics and relevant news that every PR practitioner needs to know.

It is so hard to pick a favorite episode with Neville and Shel’s natural back and forth. They make weekly news and hot topic conversations digestible and fun with their witty banter — a must-listen-to every week.

  • On Top of PR

From Axia Public Relations, Jason Mudd talks about PR’s basics, including branding, media relations, and reputation management.

This is hands down one of the best podcasts for PR professionals, especially if you are new to the scene. Jason Mudd discusses PR trade tools, brings in industry experts, and talks about different PR career aspects in such a concise manner that even the most complex tasks sound easy. The episode “How Good PR Pitches Make Good Stories” helped my PRLab teams and I achieve outstanding results for our clients this semester. If you are confused on a topic or just want to stay on top of your game, consider checking out On Top of PR.

Keeping a few of these podcasts on your Spotify or Apple playlist rotation is a foolproof way to ensure you are always on top of your PR game and in the know before everybody else. You can thank me later. Happy listening!
