Why PRLab?

By: Julie Fager, Account Supervisor at PRLab

PRLab is a course, an agency, and a community, all in one. This is my second semester participating in PRLab and the experience I have gained is invaluable. PRLab made it possible for me to make strong connections with my professors and my peers, unlike a typical college course. I have produced real client work as an Account Executive and served as a strategic manager of two account teams as an Account Supervisor. PRLab gave me the chance to learn and grow in a constructive learning environment.

Are you curious about PRLab and what is has to offer?

I asked some of my peers at PRLab at Boston University to speak about why they chose to be a part of this award-winning student-run public relations agency and what they have gained from this experience.

Why did you choose to join PRLab?

“I chose to join PRLab because it seemed like a really cool opportunity to get hands-on experience in a PR agency.” – Jessica Swarm, Account Supervisor, Charles River Clean Up Boat

“Working for a student agency is more productive than an internship because I’m performing real client work rather than just sidelining or shadowing.” – Mia Miller, Account Executive, 51 Percent Project

What personal skills have you learned from PRLab?

“I’ve learned to unleash my own unique voice and lean in with client relations. PRLab enhances so many small skills such as writing detailed agendas or leading client meetings… tasks I thought I knew before.” – Mia Miller, Account Executive, 51 Percent Project

“I am a very organized person by nature, but I’ve learned to be more flexible with my communication and projects to better accommodate the client’s needs.” – Victoria Mullen, Account Executive, Partners for Youth with Disabilities

What important life lessons have you learned so far?

“I came to the States when I was a teenager. I spent years worried that I would say something wrong or not speak fluently so I tried my best to avoid presentations or even conversations with native speakers. PRLab and the people here gave me respect and patience to let me voice my ideas, engage with peers, network with people, and boost my confidence.” – Yunshu Huang, Director of Multimedia Content

“PRLab has taught me the true value of teamwork and collaboration, something that’s not only integral in the PR profession but in life in general.” – Jessica Swarm, Account Supervisor, Charles River Clean Up Boat

How has your experience with PRLab differed from your expectations?

“PRLab has exposed me to what an agency career is really like. I didn’t expect the agency setting to be as unpredictable and urgent as it is; anything can change at any given moment.” -Victoria Mullen, Account Executive, Partners for Youth with Disabilities

“There is so much respect for the agency in the Boston PR-scene, almost all jobs I’ve interviewed for know about PRLab and the work we do.” – Tsai-Ni Ku, President of Client Service

What is your favorite memory from PRLab?

“I don’t think there has been one Monday where my e-board members didn’t make me laugh or that the professors didn’t crack a smile on my face during all-agency lectures – the people are definitely my favorite ‘memories’!” – Tsai-Ni Ku, President of Client Service
