PARTISAN REVIEW
Left. T hey are anti -Ameri.can in their orienta ti on . To one degree or
an ot~ er
they are sta ti st in their economi c phil osoph y, and th ey
believe in full -scale sta ti st measures, but even mo re impo rtant than
tha t, they have a deep stra in of wha t I ca ll a utopian program . T h ey
will say tha t they don 't like communi sm as it exi sts in the Soviet
Uni on , but they a lso don 't like socia l democracy, so they want
something that is different. Now they haven 't cla rifi ed and they don 't
have a pl atform o f wha t tha t something is, and th ey a re unabl e to do
so in any cl ear way. It comes down to va ri ous types of utopian
formul a ti ons whi ch are very frightening in their im p li cati ons for
society.

Are th ey ready to accep t the democra ti c sys tem la ter on ?
I think it is imposs ibl e to answer such a ques ti on . As you know,
we have in Ita ly a kind o f regional pa rtiti on , a kind of regiona l
power. T he Communi sts ha ve conquered many region s in Ita ly.
Wha t we know is tha t in m any cases they did no t turn o ut
to
be the
way they said they would be. T he cases of corrup ti on have been
there. Probity is no t the ma in qua lity fo r them.
We know tha t they don ' t accept any kind o f di scuss io n . We have
a very recent case about Ma ri a Antonietta Macciocchi , who by the
way is the wife of the new correspondent of
Uni ta
here in the United
States. She is a very qua lified, intell ectua ll y prepa red woman , a
writer and scho lar. She had to write a bout the intell ectua l manifes to
whi ch appea red in France. And the Pa rty did no t like wha t she said.
T ha t means that she was expe ll ed, and her subscripti on to the Party
was no t renewed-just one month ago.
We know tha t the fin an cia l sustenance of the Communi st party
in Italy comes from Moscow.
