for themselves. Many had discovered that she was a woman who
lived with a woman and were ashamed. To cover their being
ashamed they too decided to speak of her as of a person with no
talent beyond an unnecessary oddity.
It
was not a few among
those who so dismissed her who thought of themselves as the
lovers of dogs. For many years he was exiled from her market,
but her talent never allowed her to become dissatisfied.
One married to a man whose thoughts were not quite talented
enough was required to believe in her husband more than she
believed in herself. The more she knew of him, the less able was
she to meet this requirement, so he contrived surprizes in the
home that would trap her into making mistakes. Then she left
him and he killed himself.
There is one of considerable talent who lives alone. His has been
a wealthy family. He looked forward to a life of talented leisure
and let his talent grow. But his father lost all the wealth. Many
who are born poor attempt to learn how to become wealthy
while the few born into wealth practise how to live with their
possessions. This one is singular in that he feels it his duty to
learn how to become the poorer. So he lives alone.
There was one burdened with a name which was a virtue and
looks which were the illustration of that virtue in a book. She
was the quietest of dancers with a loud mother: but keeping
quiet used to give her headaches. One of her own age fell for her
because of name and looks, but she had chosen neither. Wild on
the night that they met, she was wild on a second night five years
later. But for the years between she had headaches. And after the
second night she chose not to see him. She gave up even quietly
dancing and married a respectable person who sold televisions.
Then she went to a man she had always thought of as a wild
animal. She turned quite wild herself and demanded that he eat
her up. He did as best he could, but not being as much of an
animal as she thought he failed to eat up as much of her as she
wanted. Then she swallowed drugs and killed herself.
