NEW ENGLISH POETRY
Three Poems by Deborah Evans
Whoever is sucked in; blown out,
Alone at the pinnacle of the others' affections
Must not look back or down
for whatever went before.
This thing, to see behind or down,
If
one should be aware of where one is,
Would, as the cause of feeling how one feels
Cause the old feelings to return.
Circle and circle about
How the others now,
now they sense the fear of insecurity;
Circle, circle and probe about
Their insecurity will probe out thine.
And the fall does not diminish once it has begun
Only not
to
remember how one felt or not to have felt
The downward pleasure of feeling.
Yet to have felt as now, must I not be aware of the feeling then .
