have been lawyers, and I felt that in Carter there was an unusual combina–
tion of strength and flexibility, of honesty and independence.
These feelings were very much enhanced
by
a small private meeting in
New York where a handful of people and his New York committee were free
to talk back and forth . Hearing Carter talk strengthened my previous
estimation .
Perhaps nobody could solve the appalling issues before us whether
they concern education, crime, welfare, or international relations, but
Carter's impetus might break through these vast obstructions and at least
define a pattern of hope and action.
