A POPULAR THEME
along the entire universe
From my doorstep, at twenty ,
Swinging in and out of the pastoral setting;
My father gone, my mother waiting idly
Beside the buzz of a hazy world-
Perceive it-at twenty-surrounded
By weak prospects and thin possibilities,
Caught by hours on end in the old vacuum
Of human stone-I hold myself
By the waist, about to be sick,
Dizzy over the chemistry's inevitable solutions ,
(My mind is glass against the moon),
Begun in twenty themes of a process
Where nights still named positions
Of deformities dragged deeper into sleep.
