Cortnie lowe
SELF-PORTRAIT, AN INTRODUCTION
there is an eye there, an eyebrow
and I think my mouth, yes, I see her
draw herself up to the mouth, and open
her legs, one line among the lines of my face to tell you
why I place her here, I would have to say she placed
herself, and yet it is I sign her, I sign her
"woman," as though without me
she would not be naked
but hide her name, say' 'woman' ,
but in another language
in another way may mean' 'to be," or a flower
I don't know, but certainly somewhere something
enough man to hold on my brow
although too near the eye to see, I am afraid
the rest suggests the sea, perhaps other
shapes a mermaid takes when a man, and next to him
softer forms, fur, or a bit below the head
the head of cupid, cupid shoots
like vines or thick hair
the inevitable depth
straight to here
where you can see
as in the picture
one side of everything is black.
