across the street from Colum–
bia; Kerouac and Ginsberg were
there, with the Grand Wizard
himself, Bill Burroughs, officia–
ting.
It
was Burroughs who con–
jured the magic rune from the
bubbling cauldron, and gave the
world one of the most compel–
ling, and lucrative, catch–
phrases minted west of Madison
Avenue.
The best stunt Corso pulled
off on board ship, besides mak–
ing a lot of money at poker and
humiliating a scion of the
haute bourgeoisie,
was a Truth
Game he organized in the
second-class cabin of an ac–
quaintance of his. Corso had
climbed on the top bed of a
split-level bunk, and made us
all sit in a tight circle on the
floor. Most of us were college
students, but there were a few
white collars and professionals,
and at least one budding execu–
tive. Seated on my right was a
Wellesley girl in striped bermu·
das who confided proudly that
she was the friend of another
Wellesley girl whose roommate
had been bilked of a hundred
dollars by Corso. She called him
things like "Angel" and "Bud–
dha," and was thrilled beyond
utterance whenever he stretched
his spindly arm under the dinner
table and wailed "Reach me
