H. STUART HUGHES
over the threat of nuclear war, in modest starts on an effort to
reinterpret the utopian strain
in
American thought. For the more
imaginative and sensitive of men and women under thirty, ideology
and utopia are far from dead. They have suddenly and rather
surprisingly come to life after ten blank years of slumber. Thus Mr.
Bell's book appears at just the wrong time. It has been published
at the end rather than at the beginning of an unideological epoch.
It is important, then, more for its
obiter dicta
than for its central
theme-and more particularly for the passages in "Work and Its
Discontents" in which the author almost by inadvertence opens
the door to utopian thinking. One should, I suggest, read Mr. Bell
in the reverse fashion from what he intended. But that is simply
one of the perils of publishing a volume of collected essays.
