DEER PARK

BEDA:
Don't ride her. She's near the edge.
ELENA
comes out behind
BEDA.
From the door of the bedroom
she speaks in a sullen voice.
ELENA:
Here I am, Marion. I've come back to you enriched.
BEDA:
(to avoid the quarrel)
Children, see you in prison.
He makes his exit.
ELENA:
(laughs a little)
I want to be a call-girl.
MARION :
Yes.
ELENA:
Life is most unusual.
MARION:
You're having a fine drunk.
ELENA:
I went with Collie three years and he never took me to a party.
MARION:
And Eitel never asked you to marry
him.
When she does not answer, only swallowing her drink, he con–
tinues to stare at he, and murmurs:
What do you say, Elena, marry me.
In the silence that follows, he lights a stick of marijuana, and
they pass it back and forth as the conversation continues.
ELENA:
You hate me ...
MARION:
I love you . . . why do you think I ask you to marry me?
ELENA:
'Cause you think it's a big joke.
MARION:
Don't you love me anymore?
ELENA:
Who could love you? You're almost as miserable as Charley
Eitel.
MARION
laughs.
ELENA,
putting out the cigarette, picks up the
phone and dials a number. She winks broadly at
MARION.
There is the sound of
EITEL'S
voice on the other end of the
line.
EITEL:
Hello? ... Hello ... Who is it? ... Elena ... is it you? ...
Hello!
ELENA
hangs up.
ELENA:
It seems like myoid pal Charley is still
in
town.
MARION:
There you are, with your hard Wop heart, and yet you loved
him.
ELENA:
What would you know?
MARlON:
You really loved him. No wonder you never got around to
telling Eitel about the men and boys you did to get a two-bit booking
in
a night club.
ELENA:
(dull voice)
I told you to make me a call-girl.
MARION:
You can't make it as a call-girl.
ELENA:
Why not? I could be a very good call-girl.
