PARTISAN REVIEW

Der Hofmeister
(1774) and
Die Soldaten
(1775) are Lenz's most suc–
cessful plays.
4 ]. G. Lavater (1741-1801), the Swiss theologian and moralist, famous
in his lifetime for his physiognomical writings. His
Aphorisms on Man
were
annotated by William Blake, who greatly admired his writings. Goethe's attitude
to him was more critical.
5 In 1772, at Sesenheim ncar Strasbourg, L enz made himself ridiculous
by courting Friederike Brion, for no other reason, it was said, than that Goethe
had done so before him. One of Lenz's finest poems,
Die Liebe auf dem Lande,
deals with this episode; it should h ave served to vindicate 'his sincerity.
6 G. C. Pfeffel (1736-1809), the author of poems and fables popular at
one time, lived at Colmar.
7 The gap in Buchner's story alluded to in the introduction occurs here.
The reason why the nursemaid was "deathly pale and trembling all over" is that
Lenz had just made another attempt at suicide by throwing himself out of the
window. At this point Oberlin decided tha t Lenz could not remain in his house;
he sent for two men to act as guards until he could be removed to Strasbourg,
but before their arrival Lenz attempted to stab himself with a pair of scissors.
In the course of the night he proved too strong for two men; a third was called
in, but Lenz told them that even three would never cope with him. Oberlin
managed to calm him by kindness and by consenting to pray for his soul. Later
that day, Lenz agreed to his removal to Strasbourg and left, as Buchner relates,
but with the same three men to guard him.
