"I wouldn't worry about it,"
said Grange, and for awhile Hicks
thought he was referring to his
wife, but realized suddenly that he
was not, but rather to the thesis
and Bently. Hicks knew the kind
of romantic legend which had
grown around him and his wife, his
faithfulness and her beauty and
their rather brief but idyllic mar–
riage which his friends since then
had pieced together in order to
visualize the whole man.
He thumbed through the thesis.
"What is he proving with all these
tables and graphs?" he asked.
Grange looked at them too over
Hicks's shoulder. "That there's less
squabbling as group activity in–
creases and the democratic process
grows. He's analyzing the faculty
housing area at the college where
he's teaching. He has a picture of
it somewhere."
Grange found the picture, an
aerial photograph
