looked like an ox who was ready
to burst his skin. He knew he was
being unkind, but Bently infuriated
him more than any other candidate
ever had and he had to aim his
venom at someone. Not that Bent–
ly was any more stupid than the
rest, bu t because he was the last
candidate he would ever pass
through. At the end of the term he
would retire and quit the life he
had in the past year begun to con–
sider absurd and worthless. Bently
symbolized the uselessness of it.
He remembered his wife, dead
now for thirty years, and forgotten
for the most part with a kind of
concious forgetting which had in
the first years enabled him to go
on with poise and even dignity

alone and unhampered. She would
have found Bently irresistible, and
would have seduced him because
stupidity fascinated her. She'd the
understanding for it, he mused
to himself. A more intelligent wo–
man would have tired of the kind
of men she attracted. He recalled
vaguely her dark piquant beauty
and felt a twinge of remorse that
she had died as she did, poor thing,
not even childbirth but a miscar–
riage as
if
she actually were suited
only for pleasure. He allowed him–
self to speculate on whose child it
might have been. Very likely not
his. There had been too many
Bentlys then as now.
He sighed, still thinking of his
wife.
