Grange came. He was a younger
man perhaps fifty. He had been a
football coach at one time but had
decided that sociology provided a
more secure future. Thus he had
begun his study of sociology after
he had already used his originality
in devising new plays for the foot–
ball team so that there was nothing
left of it for sociology. Still, he
knew the field and the literature,
and he could paraphrase Mann-

heim as well as Mead. One could
not expect miracles.
"Did you read this?" Hicks
asked. "The Bently thesis?"
"I glanced at it. It's competent
enough."
"I beg your pardon?" Hicks was
not hard of hearing. He merely
wanted Grange to elaborate.
"It's a little obvious but he work–
ed hard."
"So a mule works hard. Shall
we give all mules a Ph.D.?" Hicks
knew he was being cross.
"No. It's just that if Bently isn't
passed, we shouldn't have passed
anyone."
"Except Fitz," said Hicks.
"Well, yes, Fitz."
