submit to the unnatural and the
frightful, simply because, as a rule,
he prizes the routine of ordinary
existence above everything else.
Since this is also the reason why
man occasionally revolts against the
inhuman, we can hardly blame
him for being mediocre.
"Such an experience makes par–
ticipation in politics rather diffi–
cult. I, for one, feel constantly un–
easy about it. I have been called
a sentimentalist. It's true. I was
a journalist because, when I got
up in the morning and read the
paper, there were pieces of news
in it that made me mad. I wanted
to express my anger as clearly as
possible, but I was unable to do
much more than that. I certainly
didn't have a theory, much less
a comprehensive ideology. I didn't
want to go beyond the limits of
what I was sure of. Hence, I was
considered unconstructive, irreso–
lute, and a paltry moderate. Still,
I don't think I am ready to com–
promise on the matters that make
me mad: nationalism, colonialism,
social injustice, and the absurdity
of the modern State. But I also
know that my political horizon is
rather limited, if not narrow. I
can't believe in radical and sud–
den changes any longer. Finally,
the greatest political achievement
I can conceive of today would be
that we succeed in letting the
younger generation grow up in
peace. And may I insist that I am
not a pacifist."
