truly oriental passivity, Yogi Mac–
donald prostrates himself beneath
the wheels of the advancing jug–
gernaut.
Macdonald's notions about poli–
tics are advanced, to be sure, under
the banner of "morality." Actually,
however, they are neither political
nor moral, being rather a peculiar
hodgepodge of both, with a little
pacifism, anarchism, and home–
grown philosophy and psychology
thrown in. For one thing, we fail
to see how an attitude of absten–
tion from the crucial political is–
sues confronting us can be regarded
as moral, or how it is more moral
to be indifferent to the rising tide
of Stalinist totalitarianism than ac–
tively to combat it by every avail–
able means. On the contrary, the

A New Novel
by
a Modern Writer
of Stature
Isabella brought to Ferdinand
a Jove that shook her and
shocked her, a realm greater
than his own, and a political
ambition which finally robbed
them of their happiness and
their children. But together
they molded Spain and made
the whole world the arena of
their struggle for power.
Hermann Kesten, in this
powerful novel, makes an age
of royal intrigue and burning
religious fanaticism real and
immediate. In the pages of
this rich and colorful story
Torquemada emerges as flesh
and blood; Columbus dis–
closes to his royal patrons his
world-shaking discoveries. Mr.
Kesten bares Isabella's heart,
imparts to his readers the
drama of her life--from her
fantastic youth, to her blood–
stained triumph, to her deso–
late death.
FERDINAND and ISABELLA
glows with the color and the
throbbing excitement of the
age it recalls. It has the
stature of the two sovereigns
it brings back to life.
